R. Michael Barth is Managing Partner of Barth & Associates LLC, an independent Emerging Markets investment advisory firm. Mr. Barth is a member of the Board of Directors of FINCA Microfinance Holding; the SEC registered TriLinc Global Impact Fund; SFC— Finance Company for Africa (Chairman); and the Wananchi Group. He is also a member of the Investment Committees of private equity manager Africinvest’s MPEFIII and MPEF IV Funds; and shareholders representative on the Advisory Committees of two Africa oriented PE funds –CASF and African Rivers Fund– managed by XSML (on behalf of IFC’s SME Ventures program). Mr. Barth also serves as Senior Advisor of GPCA, where he chairs the Development Finance Institutions Council and as Senior Advisor to McKinsey and Company. He is also a member of the International Council of the Bretton Woods Committee.

Mr. Barth has a distinguished career in Emerging Markets development and investment. Between 2006 and 2012 he held different senior positions in Darby Overseas Investments Ltd. a leading private equity specialist and 100 % subsidiary of Franklin Templeton Investments. As (Senior) Managing Director Global Investment, he was responsible for developing Darby’s global investment operations– affording investors’ diversified access to Darby’s Emerging Markets platform — and for worldwide investor relations and fundraising efforts. During 2011 he served as Senior Advisor Business Development.

In early 2005, he completed his term of almost six years as Chief Executive Officer of FMO, the highly regarded Dutch development bank, specializing in Emerging Markets project finance/private investment. In his last two years at FMO, Mr. Barth also served as Chairman of the European Association of private sector-oriented development banks (EDFI). Between 1999 and 2005, FMO grew substantially in size, profitability and development impact and became a leading development finance institution.

Prior to his tenure at FMO, he was Director of the Capital Markets Development Department at the World Bank. Between 1982 and 1997, he held a number of senior positions at the International Finance Corp. (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, where he was responsible for a range of capital market investments in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Central & Eastern Europe, as well as for several groundbreaking Emerging Markets investment funds and market offerings. While at the IFC, he also served as the corporation’s Financial Controller. Prior to the IFC, he held several senior positions in Citicorp in the U.S, the Netherlands and Ireland, and was an economist at the Hudson Institute in Paris.

Previously he has held board positions in several Emerging Markets-based/oriented funds and institutions, including GPCA, the Emerging Markets Growth Fund Inc. and the Procredit microfinance Group. He was co-founder and member of the Advisory Board of the Financial Markets and Development Forum (sponsored by the World Bank / IMF / Brookings Institution).

Mr. Barth holds a Masters Degree in International Economics/International Affairs from the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics (hons.) from Brandeis University. He is a national of the Netherlands and a U.S. resident.
