Responding to expected increases in demand for health care services as income levels rise, emerging market (EM)-focused private capital fund managers deployed USD3.9 billion in the sector during 1H 2019. Following 2018’s record of USD8.7 billion in disclosed capital deployed, investment activity has decreased, year over year, but remains on track to surpass 2017 totals. While EM health care investments are most common in Emerging Asia, health care companies are evolving globally. As evidenced by Boyu Capital and FountainVest Partners’ USD120 million Series B investment in China-based lung cancer drug developer Antengene, EM health care opportunities increasingly involve new technologies and treatments, catering to the unique challenges faced by local populations.
