Private capital activity in the energy and power sectors across emerging markets has shifted significantly over the last decade. Between 2012 and 2016, 54% of capital invested in these sectors went to traditional oil & gas companies. However, investment in the power sector more than tripled from USD1.9 billion in 2012 to USD5.9 billion in 2018. Investment in alternative electricity in particular has surged as the sector has become increasingly profitable, government support has increased, and public perception of extractive industries has shifted. Nevertheless, opportunities in midstream oil & gas have accounted for more than two-thirds of capital deployed so far in 2019 and may remain attractive for infrastructure investors due to heightened competition for comparable assets in North America and Western Europe.
